Welcome

For twelve years the Burroughs Community Center has been working hard on behalf of the residents of Bridgeport and the region. People come to Burroughs for a variety of reasons. Middle school students come for the After School program, Tutoring, Summer Camp and the Sparks Summer Travel Program. Families come for our Community Garden, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and the Quick Start Language Center.

A commitment to collaboration and cooperation was made long before the doors to the Center opened in 1997. Through that commitment the Burroughs facility is home to nine other non-profit agencies and programs that also deliver vital services to the community. Sixty-five other non-profit groups use the Center as well to impact the community.

In these difficult economic times, organizations like the Burroughs Community Center are extremely important to so many families. Please take some time to visit our site, learn more about all that goes on at Burroughs and see if there is a way that you can help at this very important time in our history.

In Others' Shoes

For six fantastic days, 22 Burroughs middle school members explored life outside of Bridgeport.  Their trip to Maryland, Washington DC & Pennsylvania was the culmination of our six week Sparks program.   The program was developed by Tauck Foundation and they generously underwrote all the travel related expenses.

In addition to Tauck Foundation’s incredible generosity this program was made possible thanks to donations from the Fairfield County Community Foundation and the Westport Young Woman's League.  Their support helped with staffing costs as well as pre-trip preparation and post-trip activities.

Breakfast with The Beast

Saturday morning brought a special visitor to a select group of After School program members. Professional wrestler Matt Morgan, all 7 feet and 305 pounds of him, came to Burroughs for “Breakfast with the Beast”.

Members with The Beast!

While the kids asked lots of questions about what it is like to be a wrestling star Matt came armed with a much more important message. He told the story of being an 11 year old back in 1987 and going to Wakeman Boys & Girls Club and having the chance to sit in the crowd of kids while Toronto Blue Jay Willie Upshaw spoke. Matt credits the talk from Willie about setting lofty goals and working hard to achieve them with giving him the belief that he could someday be a professional athlete. He cited his visit to Burroughs as an example of “paying it forward” because when he was a kid people like Willie made it possible for him to dream big!

After an outstanding high school basketball and football career at Fairfield High School Matt went on to Monmouth University and then Chaminade University in Hawaii. After graduating in the top ten of his college class he embarked on a pro wrestling career first with the World Wrestling Entertainment and now with Total Nonstop Action. Matt also became a staple of the television show The American Gladiators last year defeating every challenger in less than 8 seconds!

A seven foot tall thanks to Matt Morgan for taking the time to come to Burroughs. Maybe 20 years down the road one of the Burroughs kids will be giving him the credit for allowing him, or her, to dream of doing something BIG one day and working to meet that goal!
